Giovanni Antonio Canal (28 October 1697 – 19 April 1768) Giovanni Antonio Canal or Canaletto, was a very famous painter during the 18th century. He was known mostly for his beautiful landscapes of Venice, his hometown. At the beginning of his career he was a theatrical scene painter. Though he did some traveling in his life, he much preferred Venice to any other city and most of his works reflect this love.

As he learned painting with his father, he started in his occupation: theatrical scenes. Most of his early work was painted from nature. He sold loads of his work to English men. Following the war of Austria ( ), his success decreased due to a sharp reduction of European tourists in Venice, so he had to move to London in 1746 and he stayed there until Then he went back to Venice and painted until his death.
