Functions Maintains body temperature Maintains body posture Supports organs in proper position. Provides movement for the body, blood, and food Guards body openings. i.e. the sphincter muscle guards the entrance / exit into the digestive tract. 6. Supports Joints.
Types of Muscle Cells Cardiac Muscle = Makes up the heart. Skeletal Muscle = Attached to bone by tendons 3. Smooth Muscle = Lines hollow organs.
Cardiac Muscle •Are Striated • Are Involuntary • Contain Intercalcated Discs • Contain Only One Nucleus • Contract Without Direct Stimulation From Nervous System. (Heart can still beat if spinal cord is severed.)
Smooth Muscle • No Striations • Are Involuntary • Contain Only One Nucleus • Are Tapered at Each End • Also Called Visceral Muscle
Skeletal Muscle • Are Striated • Contain SEVERAL Nuclei • Are Voluntary • Controlled by the Central Nervous System • Range in Length From 1mm. to 60cm. • Muscle Cells Also Called Muscle Fibers or Striated Muscle.
