MESSAGE OF POEM The poem conveys the message that an adverse situation may seem ugly and unwelcome on the face of it. If one starts looking for the usefulness in t given unfortunate, useless situation, the apparent bitterness of the circumstances vanishes in course of time. It is all in the conditioning of mind. One should have a positive attitude and approach to everything and one can make a heaven out of a hell.

BEFORE AFTER LIFE COMPARISON

STANZA-1 Duke Senior: Now, my co-mates and brothers in exile, Hath not old custom made this life more sweet Than that of painted pomp? Are not these woods More free from peril than the envious court?

EXPLAINATION OF STANZA-1 In this stanza the banished Duke is addressing his companions and brothers who are also in exile along with him. He says that as I have already experienced my royal life, the life in the forest is free from artificiality and outer show. He considers the forest to be more peaceful, away from the envies, intrigues and man-made dangers of the court.

STANZA-2 Here feel we but the penalty of Adam, The seasons’difference,as the icy fang And churlish chiding of the winter’s wind, Which, when it bites and blows upon my body, Even till I shrink with cold, I smile, and say, “This is no flattery; these are counsellors That feelingly persuade me what I am.”

EXPLAINATION OF STANZA-2 Duke opinions that the only hardship which me and my companions are facing is the same as Adam had to face. It is caused by change of seasons. The biting fangs of the icy winds blowing in a dangerous manner make my body shrink and shiver with cold. The wintry winds injure me but even then I am happy as there is no flattery.

Contd…… These winds are Genuine advisors which make me feel the reality and what I am just a human soul.

STANZA-3 Sweet are the uses of adversity, Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, Wears yet a precious jewel in his head: Finds tongues n trees, books in the running brooks, Sermons in stones, and good in everything: I would not change it.

Explanation of stanza -3 Mysteries of life always prone to be very fruitful in the end. They may seem to be ugly and unwelcome in the begining, but are always full of new oppourtunities.Atoad although look ugly and poisonous but carries a precious jewel in his head. And here (in forest) our life which is quite away from the evils of crowded city life, can learn a lot many things from the motherly nature, which teaches us through trees.

Contd……….. The ever-flowing brooks are like never- ending books, providing endless knowledge. The stones, sermonize us, helping us to choose the right path. In fact there is good in everything. I would never like to change this.

Inspiration of poem “Sweet are the uses of adversity.” It is this inspiration that we derive from this poem. We should not take adversity as a misfortune. Rather we should take it as a challenge which will strengthen our character. Thus adversity should be taken as a blessing in disguise.
