Mayor's Draft Transport Strategy –Improve the effectiveness and quality of London’s street maintenance

Road 2001 and beyond –E7.66Real improvements are needed to the effectiveness and quality of street maintenance within London. Proper planned maintenance can make local conditions better, and save money in the long run.

Road 2001 and beyond –E7.67The most serious streets maintenance issue in London, as in the rest of the country, is the road maintenance backlog. The first London-wide condition survey of the 1,400km of principal roads (‘A roads’), conducted recently by the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, suggests that the amount of funding required to bring these roads up to standard is over £100m.

Road 2001 and beyond –E7.68Transport for London’s plans and proposals, and the Local Implementation Plans prepared by the boroughs, must include a strategy for highway maintenance. The whole maintenance issue needs to be viewed as a ten year programme. However, a shorter scale programme, say over three years, is required to focus on priorities by setting achievable targets for visible improvements.

Road 2001 and beyond –Proposal E7.30: Transport for London and the boroughs will produce three-year street maintenance plans reflecting the objectives of the Transport Strategy.
