WHOLE TO PART RELATIONSHIPS Name the thought process: The Brace Map WHOLE TO PART RELATIONSHIPS Name the thought process: 2

BRACE MAP Identifying Whole to Part Relationships The Brace Map: is used for analyzing the component parts of physical or concrete objects is used in identifying the spatial relationship of parts to the whole or “structural analysis” almost always uses nouns to name the parts of an object

Guiding Questions for Constructing a Brace Map What is the name of the whole object? What are the major physical parts of the object? What are the subparts of each major part? What is this object a part of? What parts, if any, are missing?

The Brace Map + + = = + + Whole to Parts

Key Words Parts of Show the structure Take apart Identify the structure Physical components Anatomy

Guiding Questions for a Frame of Reference How do you know what you know about identifying the parts? What prior knowledge and/or experiences influence your understanding about this object? Where did you get you information? What source(s) did you use to identify the whole and its parts? Is one source better than another for this information?

Using the Brace Map Across Disciplines Math { 400 100 10 1 Parts of a Number Understanding place value and the value of each number 432 30 2

Break down numbers to simplify additions To illustrate my strategy for adding To show my thinking about groups of 10 Expanded notation helps with computation

We need to know how to convert % to decimals. We could use 10%. We have to know that this is a two step problem. We need some prior knowledge about what a “tip” is.

Using the Brace Map Across Disciplines Music: Structural Parts of an Instrument Help students see relationships between larger parts and smaller parts

Using the Brace Map Across Disciplines Science: Structural Analysis of Objects Can help students visualize the new vocabulary words as they analyze scientific structures.
