© 2012 Autodesk Learning to Design Connections in Autodesk® Revit® Structure with SDS/2 Connect David Zabka Customer Support Specialist

© 2012 Autodesk Class Summary This hands-on lab will teach you the ins and outs of code-based connection design using Autodesk Revit Structure and SDS/2 Connect by Design Data. You will learn how to set connection types and control connection variables—such as bolt types, material grades and sizes, and welds—to meet your project requirements. You will also discover how to import end reactions from analysis packages and print design calculations, including full formulas for all force checks. Finally, this class will take you through the process of round-tripping your models with the manufacturer, thereby preserving control while receiving and approving updates.

© 2012 Autodesk Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to:  Set up SDS/2 Connect to design connections to your standards in Autodesk Revit Structure  Design, edit, and customize connections within the Autodesk Revit environment  Streamline connection calculation and sketch creation  Send and receive intelligent models with greater control

© 2012 Autodesk Terminology Revit Term  Family  Family type  Element  Type catalog  End reaction  Filter SDS/2 Connect Term  Material type  Section size  Member  Material file  Load  Status display

© 2012 Autodesk Set up SDS/2 Connect

© 2012 Autodesk Set up SDS/2 Connect  Initialize  Prepares projects and templates for use with SDS/2 Connect  Library  Modifies default family libraries for use with SDS/2 Connect  Setup  Affects how connections are designed  Transfer sample SDS/2 model to incorporate standard fabricator setup  Save and open to use with different projects  Is saved within projects and templates  Options  Mostly affect performance and file size

© 2012 Autodesk Design, Edit, and Customize Connections

© 2012 Autodesk Design, Edit, and Customize Connections  Auto standard  Determines connection type based on framing situation and scenario  For majority of connections  Input connection type (Clip angle, Shear, End plate, etc.)  Connection specification allows for different configurations  User connection  You take control  Design Details and End Preps let you design the connections  Force  Override failed connections to apply your design

© 2012 Autodesk Design, Edit, and Customize Connections  Condition  Which member types are being connected  Beam to Column is one example  Scenario  What material type is connecting to what material type and how it is positioned  Wide flange to wide flange, web perpendicular is one example

© 2012 Autodesk Design, Edit, and Customize Connections  Uniform Force Method  Used to design vertical brace connections in a vertical brace to beam and column condition  Eliminates moments from gusset-to-beam, gusset-to-column, and beam-to- column connections  Pages 13-3 to of the AISC 13 th Edition Steel Construction Manual

© 2012 Autodesk Connection calculation & sketch creation

© 2012 Autodesk Connection calculation & sketch creation  Connection calculation  Provides report of limit states of connections  Extended report can be viewed in Mozilla Firefox  Provides full formulas of limit states  Sketch creation  Use Tag By Category  SDS/2 Connect loads a tag during initialization  Autodesk Revit Structure dimensioning tools can be used

© 2012 Autodesk Send & receive intelligent models

© 2012 Autodesk Send & receive intelligent models  One time transfer  Autodesk Revit to SDS/2  SDS/2 to Autodesk Revit  Roundtrip  Bi-directional transfer  Update models  Keeps SDS/2 and Autodesk Revit models in synch  Beam, column, and vertical and horizontal braces are transferred  Connections and SDS/2 Connect setup included  Joists are transferred but do not include connections
