Queen’s Hospitality Services Truths and Myths about food at Queen’s

True or False: Sodexo adds laxatives to the food so when we get food poisoning the food runs right through you

FALSE! There are also no additives to make you feel full so you eat less!

True or False: Kingston Penitentiary has a 4 star menu from Sodexo and Queen’s has a 2 or 3

FALSE! There are no such ratings and Sodexo doesn’t provide service at any prisons At least we don’t have to eat at Queen’s

True or False: There are very few processed foods used in the meals at the dining halls?

TRUE! All entrees are prepared by our highly qualified chefs All soups and sauces are made from scratch Ban Righ has a full bake shop Produce comes from over 20 local farms 92,584 cups of fair trade organic coffee Over 1/2 million apples 15 tons of carrots 10 tons of celery 19 tons of lettuce 15 tons of onions 18 tons of romaine 66 tons of potatoes

True or False: Sodexho uses Grade “D” Meat

FALSE! All proteins All beef, chicken and pork meet high industry standards

True or False: Sodexo charges too much for the meal plan and they’re ripping students off because they are charged for the meals they don’t eat

FALSE! Sodexo does not set the rates for meal plans! Sodexo submits a budget to the university based on the meal plans the university tells them to provide; Sodexo is then paid a percentage management fee based on that budget The type of plans we offer is decided by Queen’s, based on a variety of factors and student feedback: –The meal plan review committee (with student representation) –budgetary factors (by the budget review committee, also with student representation), –surveys, research, etc.

FALSE! All meal plans are budgeted based on historical patterns of attendance by individual meal plans – which include allowances for anticipated missed meals. So, unless a students eating pattern varies widely from the norm (and this is unusual) students are not paying for meals they don’t eat. There is no incentive for Sodexo or Queen’s to “save” food…the money is intended to be spent and it is spent. BUT… if there were less theft and waste, we could use the savings within that year for the benefit of current students

True or False: Large eaters are subsidized by light eaters

FALSE! Just because someone is a “light eater” doesn’t mean the foods they consume are less costly. In the winter months (when vegetables are expensive), a trip to the salad bar costs more than a large serving of lasagna!

True or False: Sodexo applies the 5-second rule when they drop food on the floor

FALSE! Our cafeteria’s are audited for food safety by the local health unit AND an independent third-party auditor on a regular basis We are also “EAT SMART!” certified by the KFL&A Health Unit

True or False: Sodexo is a rehabilitation program and only ex-cons work there

FALSE! Sodexo employs a dedicated staff to serve you each day Employees are represented by a union to resolve any issues

True or False: (a) Each student pays a sum of money (usually $70) which Sodexo budgets to cover the theft of food and cutlery. So, everyone gets to steal that much! (b) Letting friends in the back door to eat for free costs Sodexo money

FALSE! Yes, there is money in the budget to replace cutlery…just like there is money to replace furniture, pay dons and council, buy cleaning supplies, etc. etc. So, if it’s okay to steal cutlery, Is it okay to steal anything in rez ….. furniture, lamps, your don…? All food is paid for through student room and board fees – if you let someone in without paying, residence students are paying for their “free” meal!

True or False: With an average rating of “C+”, the food at Queen’s scores far worse than other schools in national surveys like the Globe & Mail

FALSE! The most common score in the food category is “D” Only four (4) schools in all of Canada rank higher than Queen’s We also rank well above our peers in the food section of the Educational Benchmark International survey conducted the Association of University & College Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I)
