The Ten Commandments The significance of the ten commandments to Christians today

Introduction Since we are not under Law of Moses, why should we study the ten commandments? Although covenant has changed, nature of God has not New Testament reveals nine moral principles reflecting what is found in the ten commandments Sabbath keeping not required but a spiritual rest is revealed

Not Under Law of Moses But Under New Covenant Gal 3:19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. Gal 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. Gal 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Nature of God Consistent Through All Ages Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Command 1 – No Other gods Exo 20:1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, Exo 20:2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. Exo 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

No Other gods Today Eph 4:4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Eph 4:6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Commandment 2 – Idolatry (Images) Forbidden Exo 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. Exo 20:5 "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

Commandment 2 – Idolatry (Images) Forbidden Exo 20:6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Idolatry Forbidden Today Joh 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 1Co 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. Col 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Commandment 3 – Calling Lord’s Name In Vain Exo 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

No Profanity And False Swearing Today Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Jas 5:12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Commandment 4 – Observe Sabbath Exo 20:8 "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Exo 20:9 "Six days you shall labor and do all your work, Exo 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

Commandment 4 – Observe Sabbath Exo 20:11 "For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

Heavenly Rest Our Hope Not Observing Sabbath Gal 4:10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. Gal 4:11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.

Heavenly Rest Our Hope Not Observing Sabbath Heb 4:8 For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. Heb 4:9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. Heb 4:10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.

Heavenly Rest Our Hope Not Observing Sabbath Heb 4:11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.

Commandment 5 – Honor Your Parents Exo 20:12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Honor Parents Today Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Eph 6:2 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),

Honor Parents Today Eph 6:3 SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH. Eph 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Commandment 6 – Murder Forbidden Exo 20:13 "You shall not murder.

Murder Forbidden Today Rom 13:9 For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

Murder Forbidden Today 1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Commandment 7 – Adultery Forbidden Exo 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery.

Adultery Forbidden Today Heb 13:4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Mat 5:28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Commandment 8 – Stealing Forbidden Exo 20:15 "You shall not steal.

Stealing Forbidden Today Eph 4:28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.

Commandment 9 – Bearing False Witness Forbidden Exo 20:16 "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Bearing False Witness (Lying) Forbidden Today Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, Rev 21:8 "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Commandment 10 – Coveting Forbidden Exo 20:17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Coveting Forbidden Today Col 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
