Game-Ending Procedures This is where you earn your money.

Desired outcomes Officials will… –List ways to avoid trouble late in the game. –Identify areas of responsibility during the last shot. –Develop an exit strategy.

Avoid trouble late in the game.

Be CONSISTENT Call the game that you have called all night. NO SURPRISES! If you have not called 3 seconds, palming, uniform violations, or hand checking prior to this ~ DO NOT START NOW. If shot blockers were allowed to do their thing, this too should continue. Changes should be for the VERY OBVIOUS.

Be AWARE. Talk to the official scorer. Verify –team fouls, –arrow, –score and –time-outs are correct. All of these factors could dictate how the last part of the game will be played.

Be PREPARED. Communicate information with partners. Anticipate everything. –Crashes. –Intentional fouls. –Quick fouls. –Where is the shooter? Hustle and work hard to get into the best position. Get every call correct in the last 2:00.

Areas of responsibility during the last shot.

2 person Pre-game – Trail has last shot. Possible exceptions: –Steal gets ahead of new lead –Full court inbounds Communicate with partner under 1:00. Other official must be prepared to help if needed (foul or shot)

3 Person PIAA says, “Center.” NFHS and IAABO say, “Opposite.” PREGAME – make a decision. Communicate with partner under 1:00. Other officials must be prepared to help if needed (foul or shot).

Down to the wire… Sell, Sell, Sell! 2 or 3 points. Shot in time or not. Blow the Whistle when horn sounds. Give a demonstrative signal. Leave no doubt.

What do we do if we disagree? The referee has the final word. The timer can be used to help determine if the horn sounded. (Last resort) If the horn cannot be heard due to crowd noise, the timer may run out or throw an object to signify the end of the period.

Develop an exit strategy.

Half time – –Meet at center circle. –After coaches leave, R goes to table. –U stays back to watch. End of game. –Identify security. –Know what exit to use. –Lanyard off. –Approve score ~ nod with prior knowledge. –Crew leaves briskly together.

Post Game Be careful what is said. Walls and vents have ears. Discuss positives and negatives. Go directly to car. Have a safe trip home. Complete necessary reports in a timely manner.

Questions ?

Summary Avoid problems –Be CONSISTENT. –Be AWARE. –Be PREPARED. Areas of responsibility during the last shot. –2-person ~ trail –3-person ~ center or opposite Develop an exit strategy.
