What did Jesus say about these laws?

Matthew 5: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 22: But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Why did Yahweh give Israel the 10 Commandments?

What does it mean to be holy?

Leviticus 20:26b “…. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own.” Romans 12:2 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Why are we to be holy?

Leviticus 19:1-2 And the L ORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the L ORD your God am holy.

Deuteronomy 6: You must diligently obey the commands of the L ORD your God— all the laws and decrees he has given you. 18 Do what is right and good in the L ORD ’s sight, so all will go well with you. Then you will enter and occupy the good land that the L ORD swore to give your ancestors. 19 You will drive out all the enemies living in the land, just as the L ORD said you would.

Matthew 5: You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

What happens if we fail to be holy?

Genesis 3:19 “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:23 “…therefore the L ORD God sent him out from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.”

Leviticus 5: “If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the L ORD 's commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity. 18 He shall bring to the priest a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent for a guilt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for him for the mistake that he made unintentionally, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt offering; he has indeed incurred guilt before the L ORD.”

Romans 6:23 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Why should I still follow the 10 commandments if Jesus has already forgiven me?

1 Peter 2: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Why does this matter? 1.Affects the way we see God 2.Affects the way we read the Bible 3.Affects the way we live our lives
