Global Wind Patterns. Remember… When we talked about air pressure we said that cold air sinks and warm air rises. This movement causes air to move.
Severe Weather. Thunderstorms Small intense systems that can produce strong winds, rain, lightning and thunder. Need 2 conditions –Air near surface needs.
Severe Weather Patterns. Hurricanes Form Over Warm Ocean Water Near the equator, warm ocean water provides the energy that can turn a low-pressure center.
Hurricanes Hurricanes form in the water. From space they look like a huge cloud with an eye in the middle. Only a few hurricanes made it to land, when.

Presentation transcript:

What is the difference between a hurricane and a tornado? 1.Turn to a double page in your books. 2.Put a title at the top of each page. 3.Draw a sketch of a hurricane and a tornado in the centre of each page. 4.Then label your sketches with the statements on the following slides. Ready….

Is this a tornado or a hurricane? Draw a simple sketch of it on the correct page.

Now, for each pair of statements, decide which is a tornado, and which is a hurricane. Then write the statements around your sketches. They occur all over the world – even in the UK. They only occur just North and south of the Equator.

From space, they look like huge anti-clockwise spirals, which might be 1000 km across. They look like a funnel of spiralling air extending from the bottom of the clouds to the ground

It’s most distinguishing feature is that it looks like a twister. It’s most distinguishing feature is the calm eye at the centre.

They move slowly, and nearly always from east to west They move very quickly

They are very unpredictable They are more easily predictable because they can be tracked by satellite.

Wind speeds are usually around 100 mph Wind speeds can be over 300 mph

They travel only a few miles – always on land They travel thousands of miles – usually across the oceans

Vigorously Exercise and avoid Greasy, creamy foods. Eat fruits and veggies To grow strong And live long. Busy, healthy kids Learn better and Earn good grades. Stay strong and smart! This is an acrostic for ‘vegetables’. Use the same idea to do an acrostic for the word ‘hurricane’ and / or ‘tornado’.
