Hurricane Season 2008 What is it? Siting requirements Pre approval Site management Tracking

What is storm debris? Storm debris can be made up of ‘vegetative’ type debris… Yard trash as in landscape maintenance (trees, shrubs, etc.) Land clearing debris OR C & D debris Waste from construction or destruction of a structure Not hazardous (can be tricky after a storm) Not household garbage (putrescible) - must go to Class I

Siting requirements Not in wetlands (natural or artificial) C & D – 200 feet Yard waste – 50 feet Potable water well C & D – 500 feet Yard waste – 100 feet Community water supply C & D – 1000 feet Yard waste – 200 feet

Siting requirements Other things to consider Neighbors (odors, etc.)!!! Hours of operation traffic patterns/accessibility Security Endangered species (gopher tortoise, scrub jay, eagles, etc.) Site rehabilitation/loss of use

Pre Approval Letter went out May 2008 requesting site locations Data will be compiled Site visits conducted as necessary New site vs. old Potential wetlands Approval letters provided Staging area information Need current contact information (gov’t and contractor) Location including GPS coordinates Type of operation expected Type of waste Type of source reduction (grinding, burning, etc.)

Site Management Don’t mix waste C & D should be separate from vegetative waste or it is all C & D Household wastes segregated and removed within 48 hours Used oil and hazardous wastes must be segregated and disposed of properly (preferably within 48 hours)

Site Management Manager on duty County or assigned by county Contractor Should be trained Maintain set back limits (should be marked) Security (Temporary fences, gates, etc.) Closure planning/timeline (as outlined in Emergency Order)

Inspections DEP required to perform site inspections New sites for pre approval Periodically during life of site Closure at end of Emergency Order

Tracking DEP web site – Internet link allows user to view various sites including HW, permitted SW, and staging sites Maintained by DEP

Tracking County user web site – User updated with site status, etc.
