3-1 PROTISTS “Odds and Ends”

A. Animal-like (Protozoan) Called this because they are heterotrophs and can move

4 Types 1. Pseudopods 2. Ciliates Examples: Ameba ( amoeba) A. Create temporary “false foot” which allows them to move and obtain food B. Some have contractile vacuole to expel excess H20 Video Examples: Paramecium –have 2 nuclei A. Ciliates are used to obtain food and ‘sense’ environment

(characterized by how they live, not how they move) 4 Types 3. Zooflagellates 4. Sporozoans (characterized by how they live, not how they move) Have flagella to move May live inside other organisms Parasites that feed on body cells and fluid May have more than one host t

B. Fungus-like Heterotrophs, have cell walls, use spores to reproduce Not-fungus because at some point in their life, they move

3 Types 1. Water molds 2. Downy mildews Live as tiny threads in water Live as tiny threads in moist places

3. Slime molds Live in moist soil or decaying plants

C. Plant- like (algae) All are autotrophs Come in many colors (pigments)

6 Types 1. Euglenoids 2. Dinoflagellates Have 2 flagella, covered in stiff plates Heterotrophs when there is no sun

6 Types 3. Diatoms 4. Green algae Beautiful glass– like cell walls Fresh or salt water

6 Types 5. Red Algae 6. Brown Algae Live in Ocean Red Pigments Live in cool rocky waters
