Characteristics of Life 1.Feed – Ingest solid food, or create own food. 2.Breathe – Exchange of gases between organism and environment. 3.Respire – Utilize energy. 4.Excrete – Expel waste products. 5.Grow – Increase in size. 6.Reproduce – Produce offspring. 7.Respond – React to environmental stimuli. 8.Move – Whole body or parts.

Characteristics of Life – Another Opinion 1.Organization – Being composed of cells. 2.Growth – Increases in size. 3.Adaption – Conforming to the environment (evolving). 4.Reproduction – Producing offspring. 5.Metabolism – Transforming and using energy. 6.Homeostasis – Regulating the internal environment. 7.Response – Reacting to environmental stimuli.

Scientific Method Question (based upon observations) Hypotheses (possible explanation) Experiment (collect data) Evaluate Data (conclude) Reject/Accept Hypotheses

Hypotheses – Testable Predictions If, then statements. Should contain Independent and dependent variables. Be careful not to make it a conclusion statement. -Temperature causes leaves to change color- Be careful about vagueness, your hypotheses should explain how you intend to prove your statement. -UV light may cause skin cancer-
