Goal: Why did Ferdinand and Isabella adopt the policy to expel Jews and Moors from the Iberian Peninsula? Motivation: Under the Ottoman Empire how was non-Muslims treated? (5minutes)

Under the Muslim rule Spain and Portugal Fight the Muslims During the Middle Ages, Muslims ruled most of Spain and Portugal. These two lands are the Iberian Peninsula. Most of the peninsula’s people were Christians. Some were Jews. The Muslims had a rich culture here. They built mosques and palaces. One example was the Alhambra in the southern kingdom of Granada. They also started schools. Muslims, Jews, and Christians studied together. Most Christians disagreed with Muslim rule. Their fight to take back the Iberian Peninsula was called the Reconquista, or “reconquest.”

Who were Ferdinand and Isabella? Isabella, the daughter of King John II of Castile, and Ferdinand, the son of King John I of Aragon, were married in October 1469. They were propelled by their Christian faith to pursue an expensive, bloody, 10-year battle to unite their land under Christian leadership.
