Most of the peninsula’s people were Christians. Some were Jews. The Muslims had a rich culture here. They built mosques and palaces. One example was the Alhambra in the southern kingdom of Granada. They also started schools. Muslims, Jews, and Christians studied together. Most Christians disagreed with Muslim rule. Their fight to take back the Iberian Peninsula was called the Reconquista, or “reconquest.”
