Der Fall der schummelnden Schüler

Chapter 1, page 21 Scan through pages Do you think the case is about: – Cheating students – Missing homework – Lunchroom protests – Prom planning gone wrong

Chapter 1, page 21 Which is a better student: Günter or Hilde? What tells you this? Name the items in Hilde’s backpack. Wie heißt die Schule? Who is Goethe? How do you say “unfriendly” in German? Find the line that says: Then the bell rings.

Chapter 1, page 21-2 Wie heißt Günters Lehrer? Was für ein Fach ist das? Did Günter sleep through a boring lecture? What happened? What are Günter’s grades like? What happened at the top of page 22? What insult does Hilde give at the end of the chapter?

Chapter 2, page 22 What does Hilde think this meeting is about? What does Günter think? Did Hilde fall into Günter’s trap? Would you hit your brother if he tricked you into a statement like that?

Chapter 2, page Describe Frau Prost. Where did she study English? Frau Prost says “ihr” when talking to Hilde and Günter. What’s that? Does Hilde give a humble answer to Frau Prost’s question?

Chapter 3, page 24 Hilde essentially says “huh?” to Frau Prost’s statement. What is that in German? Does Frau Prost defend Günter’s grade in her class? Find the line that says: “What kind of case is it?” What makes Frau Prost think that her students are cheating?

Chapter 3, page Starting at the bottom of page 24, what are Frau Prost’s guesses as to what’s going on? How has Günter cheated in the past? Have you ever cheated on one of my quizzes? Better fess up. On a scale of 1-10, how awkward is Günter’s cheating?

Chapter 4, page 25 Do you believe Günter? After all, he’s an admitted cheater. Find the line that says: “We’ll find out who’s cheating.”

Chapter 4, page So what is Hilde’s brilliant idea? Find the line that says “I swear, as sure as I’m standing here!” How are Günter’s grades? Does Günter do the right things to earn good grades? Do you? So how can Günter get good grades if he doesn’t study or anything?

Chapter 5, page So what’s Günter’s idea to find the cheater? Find the line that says: “You think you’ll film the cheating student right when he’s cheating?” What do you think “genau” means? Why doesn’t Günter think Hilde’s idea is very good?

Chapter 5, page 27 Now I’ll need two girls to act out the interview scene. Bring your booklets up and try to make this flow like a real interview. Does this interview make Grete’s English class sound a bit like our German class?

Chapter 6, page 28 Does Frau Prost like the idea of Günter filming students in secret? Why would Frau Prost allow this? Find the word for “tight” or “narrow”. What about the phrase “little room”. Did the other students notice that Günter was in the cabinet? Günter’s last thought before the paragraph break is in the future tense. What tells you this?

Chapter 6, page What are some of the actions that Günter films as he spies on the students? Did Günter see any cheaters? Translate Günter’s last spoken line in chapter 6 on page 29.

Chapter 7, page Did either Günter or Hilde catch the cheater? How did the students do on Frau Prost’s recent test? What was the test like? Was it hard? Find the word for “foreign language teacher.” The students say that Frau Prost’s teaching is good. What’s her secret?

Chapter 7, page Direktor? Is this a movie? Are Hilde and Günter right to bring this matter to the attention of the principal? Would you turn in someone for cheating? Describe the principal. Does this principal seem to take a bit too much interest in Frau Prost?

Chapter 8, page Translate Mr. Ledig’s accusation to the class. Would your class be as dead quiet if our principal accused you of cheating? Translate what the unnamed student explained back to the principal. Would you give your teacher a standing ovation as well?

Chapter 8, page 32 On a scale of 1 to 10, how awkward is this scene with the principal and Frau Prost? What is Frau Prost’s first name? Before reading the very last paragraph, can you guess what Hilde and Günter do when they get home from school? What does the very last line imply?
