Essential question: How do I conjugate these new verbs and use them?

 You conjugate a verb when you mention who does it.  Every sentence needs a conjugated verb  There are two parts to each verb – the stem and the ending  There are –ar, -er and –ir verbs  The infinitive is the unchanged form of the verb  There are some irregulars

 To conjugate, you take off the original ending and add the conjugation ending  For –ar verbs: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -an  For –er verbs: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -en  For –ir verbs: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -en  Ir, ser, estar, dar and tener are irregular

 Tell your pareja 5 important details you have (or will write) in your notes  Form and write 3 questions on the left, marking the answers on the right

 These are verbs that have a spelling change in the stem when you conjugate them ◦ Tener is one you already know. ◦ The “e” becomes an “ie” for tienes, tiene, tienen  For stem-changing verbs, you will see the stem change in the yo, tú, él/ella/Ud. And ellos/ellas/Uds forms  You WILL NOT make a stem change in the nosotros form

 There are four types of stem-changers  e-ie  o-ue  e-I (we won’t be doing these verbs this chapter)  u-ue

 Tell your pareja 3 important details you have (or will write) in your notes  Form and write 2 questions on the left, marking the answers on the right

 Aside from tener, which you know, you now have these verbs in your vocabulary ◦ Perder ◦ Empezar ◦ Comenzar ◦ Preferir ◦ Querer  Remember, don’t do the stem change in the nosotros form. Write how you would conjugate these verbs --- remember the “e” will become “ie”.

 Perder: pierdo, pierdes, pierde, PERDEMOS, pierden  Empezar: empiezo, empiezas, empieza, EMPEZAMOS, empiezan  Comenzar: comienzo, comienzas, comienza, COMENZAMOS, comienzan  Preferir: prefiero, prefieres, prefiere, PREFERIMOS, prefieren  Querer: quiero, quieres, quiere, QUEREMOS, quieren

 There are some o-ue verbs ◦ Poder ◦ Dormir ◦ Volver ◦ Devolver  There is one u-ue verb ◦ Jugar  Conjugate them. Make the stem change and don’t forget not to in the nosotros form.

 Poder: puedo, puedes, puede, PODEMOS, pueden  Dormir: duermo, duermes, duerme, DORMIMOS, duermen  Volver: vuelvo, vuelves, vuelve, VOLVEMOS, vuelven  Devolver: devuelvo, devuelves, devuelve, DEVOLVEMOS, devuelven  Jugar: juego, juegas, juega, JUGAMOS, juegan

 Tell your pareja 5 important details you have (or will write) in your notes  Form and write 3 questions on the left, marking the answers on the right

 For the most part, you can use one verb in a sentence.  You can double up on a few phrases: ◦ Ir+a+infinitive (what someone is going to do) ◦ Tener+que+infinitive (what someone has to do)  You only conjugate the first verb of the phrase  There are a few more…

 Preferir + infinitive (what someone prefers to do)  Querer + infinitive (what someone wants to do)  Poder + infinitive (what someone can/is able to do)  Necesitar + infinitive (what someone needs to do)  Empezar/comenzar + a + infinitive (what someone starts to do)  Remember to conjugate the first verb

 Do you prefer to eat or sleep?  I want to study  We can talk.  They need to watch TV.  Bob is starting to read.

 Do you prefer to eat or sleep? ◦ ¿Prefieres comer o dormir?  I want to study ◦ Quiero estudiar.  We can talk. ◦ Podemos hablar.  They need to watch TV. ◦ Ellos necesitan ver televisión.  Bob is starting to read. ◦ Bob empieza a leer.
