 Why does the sun rise in the east and set in the west?  Why do we fall in love with people?

 WWBAT define and give examples of myths.  WWBAT diagram the complexity of Greek Polytheism.

 "Myth has two main functions," the poet and scholar Robert Graves wrote in “The first is to answer the sort of awkward questions that children ask, such as ‘Who made the world? How will it end? Who was the first man? Where do souls go after death?’…The second function of myth is to justify an existing social system and account for traditional rites and customs.” In ancient Greece, stories about gods and goddesses and heroes and monsters were an important part of everyday life. They explained everything from religious rituals to the weather, and they gave meaning to the world people saw around them.  Based on the passage above, how would you best explain what a myth is?  Do you know of any myths?  What types of questions could myths answer?

 Greeks were polytheistic  Greek Gods explained many of the phenomenon’s (impressive, extraordinary) and disasters of the world  Also used as stories to teach lessons  Myth (Definition)  a story about the Gods and Goddess used to explain or teach

 Stories told about the Gods and Goddess to explain phenomenon's and tragedies  Why do people do what they do?
