Created by: Mrs. O’Hara and Ms. Wendt’s Second Grade Class Working with Mrs. Dostal Kinds of Butterflies Butterfly and Moth Body Parts Caterpillar Facts Life Cycle

A butterfly begins its life as an egg. Most female butterflies lay their eggs on the kind of plants their caterpillars will want to eat. -Jazmyne Stage 1 - The Egg

The eggs hatch into hungry larvae called caterpillars, which spend all day munching the leaves on the plant. -Nicole Stage 2 - The Larva

A butterfly is in its third stage of metamorphosis, the pupa, when it forms a chrysalis. -Alex Stage 3 - The Pupa

The chrysalis cracks open. At first, the butterfly’s wings are soft and crumpled. In an hour or two, it is ready to fly! -Ashley Stage 4 - The Adult

This life cycle may take 25 days to a year, depending on the type of butterfly or moth. -Trevor The Life Cycle

Caterpillar Facts

Caterpillars’ bodies are divided into 13 parts, two antennae and six true legs. They have breathing holes called spiracles. -Briana Caterpillar Body Parts

The baby caterpillars grow inside the eggs until they are ready to hatch. If the weather is warm, the eggs may hatch in a few days. -Breanna Eggs

A caterpillar keeps eating until its skin can’t stretch anymore. When the old skin splits open, the caterpillar crawls away with a new, larger skin. This change is called molting. -Myhkal Molting Its Skin

Many caterpillars are covered with prickly hairs. When a bird tries to eat one of these caterpillars, it gets a mouthful of painful prickles. -Rylie Hairy or Smooth

Butterfly and Moth Body Parts

Like all insects, butterflies have six legs and three main body parts: a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. -Mark The Body

Butterflies usually rest with their wings folded shut. Moths rest with their wings open. -Akira The Wings

Butterflies have three pairs of strong legs that are attached to the thorax. The butterfly tastes the nectar with its feet. -Meghan The Legs and Feet

Butterfly antennae have little knobs. Moth antennae have no knobs. Both use their antennae to smell. -Jacob Butterfly and Moth Body Parts

Butterflies have two large eyes called compound eyes. Each compound eye is made up of many tiny lenses. They don’t see very well. -Angelica The Eyes

The mouth is called a proboscis. When it wants to drink, the insect stretches out the proboscis, using it the way we use a straw. -Blake The Mouth

Kinds of Butterflies

Morphos are the largest butterflies in Central and South America. They can have a wingspan of more than nine inches. -Austin The Blue Morpho

This butterfly is called the Red Spotted Purple even though it doesn’t seem to have many red spots. Most of its red spots are underneath! -Rebecca The Red Spotted Purple

Swallowtail butterflies have long, pointed wings that resemble the tail feathers of a bird called a swallow. Over 500 different kinds of swallowtails exist, all very large and colorful. -Cara The Swallowtail Butterfly
