noninvasive lung volume measurement

what is emka BELT? non-invasive tool to measure thoracic and abdominal volume based on the respiration inductance plethysmography (rip) monitors respiration monitors bronchoconstriction

what is respiratory inductance plethysmography (rip)? elastic and wire belts worn around the chest and abdomen. alternating current (AC) passed through belt generates a magnetic field. breathing changes the cross-sectional area of the animal’s body and shape of the belt’s magnetic field. this induces a change in resonance frequency of the circuit. the measure of this frequency provides a linear representation of cross-sectional area

what does it measure? 1/3 used without calibration (factory settings) provides exact values for: breathing frequency duration of inspiration and expiration duration ratios asynchrony between thoracic and abdominal movements (phase shift) apnea, emesis, cough indications of absolute values and assessment of relative changes for: tidal volume and minute ventilation maximum and minimum flow

what does it measure? 2/3 used with calibration precise, subject specific calibration is possible with a mask requires 2 min procedure prior to recording uses extra data channel linked to fleisch tube & mask provides exact values for: tidal volume and minute ventilation maximum and minimum flows relative contribution of thorax and abdomen

what does it measure? 3/3 bronchoconstriction assessed with phase asynchrony in abdominal and thoracic signals and the calculation of phase angle from: thoracic vs. abdominal loops (dogs) abdominal vs. thoracic loops (primates)

in the absence of drugs there is good synchrony of thoracic & abdominal signals courtesy of CIT baseline period: near perfect synchrony

carbachol (a brochoconstrictor) induces asynchrony of thoracic & abdominal signals courtesy of CIT 30 mn after administration: near total asynchrony

asynchrony changes as displayed by thoracic/abdominal volume loops

why use emka BELT ? signal quality is excellent belt length is easily adjustable to animal size calibration from mask is valid, reliable and easy positive controls repeatedly produce expected effects asynchrony (phase shift) assessment is an efficient and reliable indicator of bronchoconstriction apnea is detected using shape-recognition algorithm

inclusion of safety pharmacology endpoints into general toxicology studies “Safety pharmacology studies measure functional indices of potential toxicity. These functional indices may be investigated in separate studies or incorporated in the design of toxicity studies.” (ICH S6) “An assessment of vital organ function, including cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous systems, should be available before the initiation of clinical studies; such parameters could be included in general toxicology studies.” (ICH S9) why use emka BELT ?
