Presentation transcript:

They are from India Left India around 1000, and started to live nomadic life From that time they are travelling all around the world

The Roma are the biggest ethnic minority in central and eastern Europe, estimated at about five million people. They are also the poorest of the poor.

In ,683 persons stated that they were Gypsies. According to the most reliable estimates their number is currently 450, ,000.

The whole poulation is 10 million peole From this there are roma people, which is 5 % of the whole population

Population: 38 million people Gypsies: 12.6% = people of the whole population

Despite an improvement in the state of housing, 14% of Gypsies still live on separated sites. (The construction program of basic housing was concluded in 1988). Many Gypsy families are unable to cope with the burden of their mortgage payments (which have risen) and the cost of maintaining their homes

Many examples are showing us that mostly the children are not going to school, because they rather stay at home for some reason

Mr Jakob Mirga in the Romani settlement in Maszkowice, southern Poland. Mr Mirga regularly reports attacks by local non-Roma to the local authorities. He told the ERRC that non-Roma in his town are never prosecuted for anti-Romani crimes. photo: ERRC

Violence against Gypsies is very common: In hospitals Schools Public transports etc.

The problem is in the roots of the society The societys approach should be changed somehow We should realize that every human beeing is equal

Acknowledge differences between those who are working on the antioppressive project (concerned clients and carers) Locate individual problems within a social context

We should use the media Such as: advertisements, short films about getting to know their culture, with the aim, that the people would see them equal to everyone

1990 April 18: The first Romanian Gypsy newspaper, Satra Libera (Free Camp), begins publication with a startling caricature of a Gypsy slave girl breaking out of her chains on the front page.

One of the most famous bands in Hungary is the gypsy music band with 100 members.

Their lifestyle is strange for us, ours is strange for them… we oppress them because of they are different…
