Who are YOU? Federalists Democratic-Republicans

You are to create a T-Chart over the following issues that shaped the Election of 1800. You are to put a check mark in the column that you most strongly agree with. This is your personal opinion, not your friends or neighbors opinion. There is NO wrong opinion.

What kind of Government would you support? Strong National/Federal Government Limited National Government with States Rights

Who should we be closer allies/friends and trading partners with? French British

Which type of Economy? Economy based upon Business and Shipping Economy based upon Farming

Should we have national bank?` Favored a National Bank Wanted State Banks to . control their own money

Interpretation of the Constitution Loose construction Loose construction-means that the federal government can take reasonable actions that the constitution does not specifically forbid “Can be flexible when need be” Strict construction- people who favor strict constitution think that that federal government should do only what the constitution specifically says it can do “Means what it says”

Biggest Governmental Fear Fearful of a Government Ruled by angry uneducated mobs…Shays and Whiskey Rebellion Fearful of a Government ruled by one person or a powerful few….Monarchy, Tyrant or Dictator

Who should be in charge of the government? “The common people should have more say in the government. After all, they make up the greatest majority of Americans.” “The rich and educated should rule because they have a vested interest in and knowledge of government.”

Who said it? Hamilton or Jefferson Those who labor in the earth are the chosen people of God. Men are divided into two parties. Those who fear and distrust people and those who identify themselves with the people. Take mankind in general, they are vicious and governed by their passions. One great error is that we suppose mankind more honest than they are. The voice of the people has been said to be the voice of God, but the people are turbulent and changing, they seldom judge or determine right. Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers. I have great confidence in the common sense of mankind.

If ever this vast country is brought under a single government, it will be one of the most extensive corruption. The cause of the French Revolution is compared to that of our American revolution, I do not like that comparison. A firm Union will be of the utmost moment of the peace and liberty of the states It is argued that a bank will give convenience to collecting taxes, I sir say it will swallow the common man I believe the British government forms the best model of government the world has ever produced. A bank has a natural relation to collecting taxes and promoting trade It is the British government which is so corrupt that has destroyed that nation A little rebellion now and then is a good thing. The incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in my opinion, been delegated to the United States by the Constitution.

Justice and liberty make the man, the government is the enemy of individual liberty. Give all the power to many and they will oppress the few. Give all power to the few, they will oppress the many. Both therefore, ought to have power, that each may defend itself against the other.
