India Word of the Day: Oppress *To crush by abuse of power **The leaders of North Korea have oppressed their people by refusing to give them their human rights.

India is colonized by Great Britain starting in 1600s

Rules Britain restricted Indian economy –Indians could not make textiles –Grow cash crops Tea & coffee Indigo (dye) Cotton Opium! Why do cash crops cause problems for the local ppl ?

WW1 India fights w/British b/c they promise self-rule –Guess what happens? –Right, nothing! –So, Indians begin to protest –So, Br. passes Rowlett Act: if you protest, up to 2 yrs in jail (w/o jury trial)

Amritstar Massacre Ppl met to discuss politics both Hindus (polytheistic) & Muslims (monotheistic) came Scared Br! Shoot into crowd killing 100s Guess how ppl feel now?

Mohandas Gandhi ( ) Civil disobedience: Non violent protest agst unfair laws –Boycott (don’t buy) Br goods like cloth (Gandhi weaves his own)

More Civil Disobedience…. –Stop paying taxes –Don’t vote **Would the Br care if they did these things? These things hurt Br where they care the most ---- $$$ and orderly society So, put a tax on salt (force ppl to pay taxes) What should Gandhi do?

Salt March (1930) Instead of paying tax, walk 240 miles to sea & get their own salt (illegal)!

Should the Indian protestors use violence to get what they want? Sometimes, peaceful Indian protestors were met with violent British officials

Agree or Disagree? Pg 388 Peaceful protests such as civil disobedience are more effective than violent protests.
