GOLDWATER RANGE CRITICAL MISSION ELEMENTS 56th FIGHTER WING Located west of Phoenix, Luke Air Force Base is home to the 56th Fighter Wing, the largest fighter wing in the world with 170 aircraft, 26 squadrons, four tenant units, nearly 8,000 military and civilian personnel, and stewardship of the 1.7 million acre Barry M. Goldwater Range. Luke is the only active-duty Air Force F-16 training wing. Luke Air Force Base is named for the WWI flying ace Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr., the first aviator to receive the Medal of Honor. Lieutenant Luke scored 18 aerial victories, 14 against German observation balloons, before being killed at the age of 21 on Sept. 29, LUKE MISSION LUKE HISTORY Luke Air Force Base trains the world’s greatest F-16 fighter pilots and maintainers, while deploying mission-ready warfighters. Brigadier General Kurt F. Neubauer is the 56th Fighter Wing commander, Luke Air Force Base, Ariz. General Neubauer is a 1981 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. He has served in numerous operational flying and staff assignments, including United States Air Force Weapons School instructor pilot and Chief of F-22 Operational Requirements. He has commanded the 34th Fighter Squadron, Hill AFB, Utah; and 8th Operations Group, Kunsan Air Base, South Korea. Prior to assuming his current duties, he was the commander, 11th Wing, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington DC. General Neubauer is a command pilot with more than 3,500 flying hours in the F-16, including combat operations over Iraq. F-16 combat pilots and maintainers currently in Afghanistan and Iraq were trained at Luke. Since 1941, Luke has graduated more than 55,745 pilots.
