Lesson 13 – Luke 4:14–32; 5:1– 6:49 This Day is the Scripture Fulfilled

Luke 4:16-32 Just from the picture, what can you guess is going on here? v16 – Where is he? Why is that place important? – In Nazareth, where he grew up. – He is preaching to His own Video: -videos/videos/jesus- declares-he-is-the- messiah?lang=eng#gallery = -videos/videos/jesus- declares-he-is-the- messiah?lang=eng#gallery =

What is Christ Reading? (v17) Who is Esias? – Greek form of Isaiah (61:1-2) – This is a well-known Messianic prophecy. v20 – “the eyes of all them… were fastened on him.” “This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears.” How does knowing someone make it difficult to accept them in a position of authority? Separate the work from the person.

v28-32 People are in disbelief, and Christ refers to 2 stories: – Sarepta – 1 Kings 17 – Elijah and the unending bread and oil – Naaman – 2 Kings 5:14-17 – Elisha and healing the leper Why are these two stories relevant? Bruce R. McConkie: “How aptly Jesus chose his illustrations! Both of these ancient prophets, dishonored by their own, conferred great blessings upon foreigners. So it was with the Nazarenes; others, not they, had seen his great works” (Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, 1:162).” This made them so angry they tried to kill him. “he passing through the midst of them went his way” – Already showing power over death. He ministers and performs miracles to others who receive more readily (v32). He has moved on.

4 Miracles Read the Miracle: – Row 1 – Luke 4:33-37 – Row 2 – Luke 5:1-11 – Row 3 – Luke 5:18-26 – Row 4 – Luke 6:1-12 Log the Miracle – What happened? – How did Christ teach the people using the miracle?

Devils and Fish Luke 4:33-37 – Cast a devil out of a man – “Let us alone” – They recognized Christ – “What a word is this” – by His Word He defeats the unclean Luke 5:1-11 – Simon Peter (with James and John) fishing, unsuccessfully. – Christ tells them to fish on the other side, net breaks from all of the fish. – “they forsook all, and followed him” – Matthew 4:19 – “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”

An Airdrop and a Withered Hand Luke 5:18-26 – Man with palsy (crippled) dropped from ceiling – “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee” – v24 – Christ has power to heal physically and spiritually. – Think of the words He uses to heal: “Arise”, “Be made whole”, “Be ye clean” Luke 6:1-12 – Pharisees trying to catch Christ again on breaking the Sabbath, first by eating corn, then by healing a withered hand – “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good?.. to save life?”

Luke 5:30-32 “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” We are all sinners, let us not think that we are too “righteous” to accept Christ. We may feel entitled, chosen, elite. We must be as those falling at Christ feet, burdened, humbled, full of hope, and ready to forsake all. Then we can truly partake of His word.

Notebook Ideas How do the people who receive miracles from Christ good examples for our own lives? How can we still accept our church leaders even if we know them as people with faults? Why does Christ not simply stay with the righteous, those who have been faithful all along?
