Typhoon Haiyan Disaster By Jayden Dunsford and Luke Vescio, 9c
When and where did it occur? The mega typhoon Haiyan hit two main provinces in the Philippines, Leyte, and Samar. It was the perfect storm in terms of its sheer size, its circular symmetry and the tightness of the storms eye. When Haiyan hit the shore in the Philippines, the ferocity of it set records. Winds were 250km/h with gusts over 300kph. With that much force it is like standing behind a revving engine of a jumbo jet. A 5 metre storm surge, created from an intense low and the storms centre sucking at the sea that caused most damage.

What was the extent of the hazard? The super typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines at 4am (local time), with winds near 195mph, making it the strongest tropical cyclone ever to make landfall in recorded world history, according to the satellite estimates. The storm has officially peaked the Dvorak scale, which is used to measure strong strength storms using satellites and was measured at a scale of 8.1 on an 8.0 scale.

What were the impacts of the typhoon disaster? Typhoon Haiyan swept away the port-city of Tacloban in the blink of an eye. The damage is widespread across six Philippine islands with information trickling from remote islands. More than 11 million Filipinos have been affected, many being displaced or left homeless from the tsunami. From those 11 million, 5200 people died, more than 23,000 had been injured, and 1611 were still missing across the islands.
