History 1000 BC to 1600 AD – First native villages and trade networks were established. Jul y 30, 1609 – French explorers claimed Vermont as part of New France – The treaty of Paris gave the control of Vermont to the English. January 18, 1777 – Vermont became an independant state – Vermont joined the Federal Union.

Probably not the most interesting state? Vermont's capital city, Montpelier, is the smallest state capital in the U.S., with a population of less than 9,000 people. Montpelier, Vermont is the only U.S. capital without a McDonald’s restaurant. Forests cover more than three-fourths of the state. Its population, only about 620,000 people, is ranked 49th among states. Until 1996, Vermont was the only state without a Wal- Mart.

It still might surprise you! It is one of the few states that actually was independant for some time. Besides the original 13 states Vermont was the first to join the USA. Vermont is the lead producer of maple syrup in USA. Due to its big forests Vermont is an amazingly colourful place to spend autumns. Its Green Mountains make it one of the best states when it comes to skiing and snowboarding.

Symbols and importance State song – “These Green Mountains” State flower – red clover State mammal – Morgan horse State tree – sugar maple State rock – slate, marble, granite 2 presidents – Calvin Coolige, Chester Arthur
