Iredell Statesville Schools English as a Second Language Department Fall 2010 WIDA Standards

What is WIDA? WIDA stands for World-Class Instructional Design and Consortium’s Assessment System. WIDA is a resource guide for teachers and administrators.

What is WIDA? It is designed to address the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) to become proficient in social, instructional and academic English Language. WIDA developed ACCESS ( K-12 LEP annual test) for ELLs based on its English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards.

Members of the WIDA consortium Alabama, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin

About WIDA The Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is the home of the WIDA consortium. WIDA partners with the Center of Applied Linguistics, MetriTech, Inc., and World Learning.

WIDA ELP Standards Frameworks SummativeFormative

Summative Framework Provides teachers, students, and test developers with tools to help ELLs to demonstrate their progress with the English language.

Formative Framework Guides teachers and students in aspects of language instruction and learning. This framework is less measurable than a test and less noticeable, but is important to teaching and language acquisition.

WIDA ELP Standards The standards focus on the language needed by the students to succeed in school. These standards are different from a regular NCSCOS.

Grade Level Clusters The standards are divided in 5 clusters: PreK-K, 1- 2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Model Performance Indicators (MPIs) Single cells within the standards’ matrices that describe specific levels of English language proficiency. Components of an MPI include: language function, example topic, and support.

Model Performance Indicators Components Indicates how language will be used to communicate in a specific task. Language Function Relates the context for language interaction within school. Example Topic Provides a necessary avenue for ELLs to access meaning. Support
