The Shelter of God’s Peace January 4

Admit it now … What kind of New Year’s resolutions have you made in the past? The motive behind most New Year’s resolutions is – To gain a better sense of balance and control in one’s life … to be more at peace. – Today we consider how God is the source of peace in the midst of turmoil

Listen for why not to fear. Psalm 46:1-3 (NIV) God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah

The Power of God’s Peace What words of hope introduce the poem in verse 1? What difference did the writer’s affirmation of God make in his view of life? What contrast did the psalmist make between God and life’s situations?

The Power of God’s Peace Consider how the psalmist described God with three words … Refuge … Strength … Helper What kinds of situations would cause you to need refuge? … to need strength? … to need help? What are some ways God has been a refuge, strength, or a helper to you?

The Presence of God’s Peace Agree or disagree: Peace can be defined as the absence of conflict. AgreeDisagree

Listen for the presence of God’s peace. Psalm 46:4-7 (NIV) 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah

The Presence of God’s Peace How will the city of God be protected from threats? What kinds of threats do believers face today? Identify phrases that emphasize the reality of God’s presence even though we face these threats.

The Presence of God’s Peace God is in our midst. What does this tell us about His intentions for our relationship with Him? What does this psalm teach us about God’s power over the nations and governments of the earth?

Listen for reasons to be still. Psalm 46:8-11 (NIV) Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. 10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." 11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

The Promise of God’s Peace In verse 8, what did the psalm writer invite his listeners to do? What benefits do God’s people enjoy? What do you think it means to "Be still, and know that I am God"?

The Promise of God’s Peace How can we practice being still before the Lord? What is the promise concerning God Himself? Why would His exaltation assure us of peace?

Application Read Psalm 46 daily for the next week. – Choose one verse to memorize – Let it be a reminder of God’s power during times of turmoil

Application Evaluate what disrupts your peace. – Make a list of things that cause you fear and anxiety – For each item on the list tell God you are focusing instead on His peaceful presence

Application Join hands with others – Work with a group or a ministry that seeks to bring spiritual peace into people’s lives – Look for ways to minister to people so they can experience the peace that comes through Jesus Christ
