3/12/08 AIM: Why is HIV virus so dangerous? DO NOW: 1) Please take the handout and your charts from the front table. 2) Sit in groups and finish working on your charts. 3) Lets get ready for the presentations in 10 minutes! Please note: Each group will answer their assigned questions on the chart paper. (Your answers should include the pictures that go with it).

Group 1 : Q1. What is an invader of the body? Give 2 examples. How does your body recognize it? Group 2 : Q 2. Which type of immune cells are the first responders to an invader? What do these cells do? Group 3 : Q 3. What makes the T and B cells more specialized? How many antigens can one type of T or B cell recognize? Group 4. Q 4. Which type of T or B cells respond to the macrophages? What do they do? How important are they for the function of other types of T and B cells? Group 5. Q 5. What is a virus? How do viruses attack? Group 6. Q 6. What happens after a cell gets infected by a virus? PS: Please write vocabulary words on the word wall.

Flow Chart Antigen Macrophages Helper T cells B Cells Killer T cells Plasma cells Memory cells Antibodies Future Attack Attacks Kill infected cells

Q. Which type of immune cells help all other types of T cells and B cells? Ans. Helper T cells Q. Can the other types of immune cells (T and B cells) work without the Helper T cells? Ans. NO… Q. What do you think will happen if an invader attacks/kills the Helper T cells? 1)Body won’t be able to make antibodies made by the B cells. 2) Killer T cells won’t be able to kill infected cells. In other words, your immune system will not work Your body will now become vulnerable to all the invaders around you…because your immune (defense) system will be weak or dysfunctional.

AIM: Why is HIV virus so dangerous? HIV virus attacks the helper T cells and brings down the whole immune system. Copy Helper T cell HIV Virus

How does AIDS kill you? Acquired Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome People with AIDS die because their ___________ __________ is weak and they can’t fight infections They die of diseases like Pneumonia, Meningitis, etc., which are caused by bacteria copy

Summary Q 1. Make a flow chart of the information from all the groups. (Hint: A B C) Bonus question! How do viruses multiply?
