6 Basic Science Proposing Basics Two-phase proposal with science justification in Phase 1 Phase 2 for Basic Science will be led by SOFIA staff and will require significant involvement from the Instrument teams –Will take advantage of lessons learned from Short Science Proposals shall be generated/submitted using the SOFIA Proposal Tool (SPT) –Similar to, and based on, the STScI APT Exposure time calculator available for FORCAST (SITE) Exposure time tutorial available for GREAT Transmission calculator (ATRAN) Visibility tool available on-line –No flight plans required/expected Lists of Reserved Observations for FORCAST and GREAT will be published with final CfP

8 Background SOFIA was always planned to take advantage of regular instrument upgrades “Science Vision” exercise, SOFIA 20/20 workshop, and developments of/for 1st generation instruments makes the issue of 2nd generation instruments timely NASA HQ has started the preparations for an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for the 2nd Generation US SOFIA Instrumentation –Draft AO expected to be released in Winter 2010/2011 At the SSSC in September 2009, Paul Hertz presented a schedule for the proposal solicitation/selection, including a recommendation/suggestion that a workshop be organized in Summer An SOC/LOC was organized by the SOFIA project to respond to the NASA request, consisting of Erick Young, Pamela Marcum, B-G Andersson, Eric Becklin, Scott Horner, Thomas Roellig and Martin Ruzek and Hans Zinnecker.

9 Motivation The SOC adopted the following Mission Statement for the workshop: The workshop will provide a venue for interaction and collaboration between theorists, observers and instrument developers to: Review the most important scientific questions addressable through IR and sub-millimeter observations, particularly as they pertain to SOFIA in a 3-7 year range. Identify the most urgently needed new instruments required for those observations. Highlight technology advancements that can lead to powerful new instrumentation in the near term. Discuss unique, synergetic observing programs between SOFIA and other existing and near-term observatory facilities from both space and the ground. While the workshop is being organized in response to the plans for the NASA instrument AO, it is hoped that it can also provide a forum for informal discussions between the US and German communities w.r.t. instrument development and “who does what”.

10 Organization Because of potential conflicts of interest relating to the proposal selection, the SOC decided, on NASA’s advice, on a workshop organization where: –All talks are Invited Reviews Invitees selected by SOC to not include likely instrument proposal PIs Topics of the Invited Talks selected by the SOC –All contributed papers in poster format Unlimited number of posters - none will be rejected due to space –All posters and talks will be made available on-line in a timely manner after the workshop –No printed proceedings

11 Location and Timing The workshop will take place at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, on the Monterey peninsula, California Sunday-Tuesday, June 6-8, 2010 Sunday, June 6, activities consists of dinner and opening reception Monday-Tuesday, June 7-8, full days of workshop activities
