Keeping a Shooter’s Journal
Presentation transcript:

The Shooting Diary What is it & Why use it?

The Shooting Diary What is it? (Physically)  A tool to help the shooter perform better.  A tool to help the Coach coach better.  What does it look like? –It can be a formal booklet - CMP’s Shooters Journal –It can be as simple as a notebook from Wal-Mart for 97 cents. –Or a small 3-ring binder/notebook, portable –It needs to be able to take some abuse from being used frequently –Really anything you can put down your thoughts as they pertain to your shooting

The Shooting Diary What is it ? (internally) or what goes in the shooting diary?  Really anything can go into the diary that you feel is important to help you perform better in the discipline your shooting –Goals –Your shot plan –Charts for tracking shots (Way of the Rifle) –Mental notes  How you feel (PMA)  Weather conditions (shooting outside)  Inner positions feel  Coaches comments – positive or negative  Travel notes for the “next big match”  Scores, etc.

The Shooting Diary What doesn’t go in the shooting diary?  Anything that you wouldn’t want anybody else to read! Can my Coach read my diary, or others?  As a Coach, I don’t read their diary due to it being personal- but you can ask to see if they are entering proper information as it pertains to a certain practice or area being worked on.

The Shooting Diary Why use a Shooting Diary?  The main reason to use a shooting diary is for feedback  By “feedback”, I mean you have a written record that can tell you why you shot bad, good, or in between.  If you don’t have a shooting diary you will reach a plateau and just level off there.  It will be like you are in the dark room trying to find the light switch but can’t. You are without any direction!

The Shooting Diary Conclusion Every elite shooter around the world uses a shooting diary – Every elite shooter around the world uses a shooting diary – why don’t you? why don’t you?
