The mental and emotional condition (as of enthusiasm, confidence, or loyalty) of an individual or group with regard to the function or tasks at hand A sense of common purpose with respect to a group : esprit de corps WHAT IS MORALE? The common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm, devotion, and strong regard for the honor of the group esprit de corps

DEFINITION ‘Pertain[ing] to [the individuals'] efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the group in accomplishing the task in hand’. This definition links the morale of the individual with that of the larger organization.’ - Irvin L. Child

The first relates to staying focused and committed, what is now usually referred to as Employee Engagement. As a great deal of work has demonstrated, engaged employees are great for the organizations that they work in. The Two Main Aspects of morale High engagement leads to positive business outcomes, but it is only sustainable if the high engagement is supported by high levels of employee well-being. So, to perform well in the current difficult times organizations need to focus on both engagement and Well-Being to ensure that their people can stay focused, productive and well.

What Impacts Morale in an Organization?  Objectives of the Organization - Goals  Leadership – Subordinates achieve their goals  Group Members – Co-Workers  Job Satisfaction - Self-development  Compensation - wages and salaries  Living Conditions and health - Physical and Mental health  Changes in Management – Manager  Employee Opportunity - Company offers  Confidence in Management - Competent  Communication - Remain open

Morale Provides a Competitive Edge in Good Times and Bad - Surviving a crisis High Morale Supports the Implementation of Organizational Strategies -Making it happen depends to a large degree on your people, and therein lies the power of morale The Morale Process (Measurement-Implementation) Gives Employees a Voice -Measuring morale and feeding back the results, when carried out correctly, improves morale High Morale Helps Organizations Attract and Retain Talented People - They are eager to let the world know how good it is to work for them. Why Morale is so important in an organization?

High Morale Makes the Workplace Easier to Manage and Increases Productivity High Morale Reduces Workplace Accidents, Reduces Absenteeism, Reduces Workplace Stress, Improves Employee Health and Reduces Sick Days Taken High Morale Organizations in the For-Profit World Have Better Financial Performance than Low Morale Ones - Morale is positively correlated with higher stock prices, higher earnings per share, and even five year survival following an IPO. High Morale Organizations Can Have Higher Customer Satisfaction than Low Morale Ones - Causal connections between the two. Morale is a Leading Indicator and Allows Organizations to Prevent Potential Negative Situations The Morale Process Is One of the Most Democratic Activities in Which an Organization Can Participate - Every single person who works in an organization the chance to say exactly what they feel
