Parts of a Flower 6TH Grade Science

What is a flower? A flower is the part of the plant that makes the seeds. Flower Video

There are four main parts of a flower. leaves stem roots

What is the function of the root? The roots absorb water from the soil. root

What is the function of the stem? The stem helps to support the plant. It also transports water & minerals. stem

What is the function of the leaf? The leaves use sunlight to provide the plant with energy. They also let in carbon dioxide through tiny openings called stomata. leaf

What is the function of the flower? The flower helps the plant to reproduce. flower

All flowers have male and female parts pistil stamen This is the name for the FEMALE part of the flower. pistil stamen This is the name for the MALE part of the flower.

Tube that pollen travels down The pistil (female part) stigma Sticky Catches pollen style Tube that pollen travels down ovary Contains eggs

The stamen anther filament pollen (male part) Produces & contains pollen filament pollen Yellow powder Fertilizes eggs

Other parts of the flower petals sepal The colorful, often bright part of the flower. They attract pollinators and are usually the reason why we buy and enjoy flowers. The parts that look like little green leaves that cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens. receptacle End of flower stalk

Making your flower

Step 1 1. Color all parts of your flower first. 2. You can color the petals any color you like  3. Then cut out all the parts of the flower. 4. Do not cut out the labels until the end.

Step 2 Start by gluing down these parts first.

Step 3 Finish the flower as shown. You will need to tuck the second petal inside the receptacle before you glue it down.

Preparing your labels: Color the stamen, filament, anther, & filament blue. These are the male parts of the flower. Color the stigma, style, pistil & ovary pink. These are the female parts of the flower. Color the stem, sepal, receptacle, and leaf green. These are the female parts of the flower. Keep the petal label white and cut out all of the labels.
