Lessons From Saul’s Sin 1 Samuel 15:10-23

Introduction Sin and temptation Consequences Like us in many respects Same today (1 Corinthians 10:11) Consequences Come to everyone End of Saul’s reign

War With Amalek Authorized by God Enemies (1 Samuel 15:1-3) Descendants of Esau (Genesis 36:12; Exodus 17:8-16)

War With Amalek “Listen to the words of the Lord” Commanded to fight (v. 1) Could not act without it (1 Samuel 13:8-14) Must have authority (Colossians 3:17)

Understandable Commands Not hard to understand Can’t say it’s too hard (1 Samuel 15:3, 13, 20) Was it just “Samuel’s interpretation”?

Understandable Commands Can understand God’s word alike Paul said so (Ephesians 3:4; 5:17) God’s intention (Ecclesiastes 12:13; Hebrews 5:9)

Doing Most Is Not Enough Saul did only part (1 Samuel 15) Spared Agag and the best of the animals Was he obedient? (vv. 8, 9, 11, 19, 22, 23, 26)

Doing Most Is Not Enough Called rebellion Rejected God (1 Samuel 8:7) Obeyed the people (vv. 21, 24) Command, not be commanded Total submission (Matthew 7:21-23; Luke 14:26)

Doing Most Is Not Enough Saul deceived himself Through conceit (v. 17; Galatians 6:3) Heard but did not do (vv. 3, 11; James 1:22)

Sin Catches Up With Us May try to hide it Israel (Numbers 32:23) Lying will not help (v. 13; Ephesians 4:25) Blaming others will not help (vv. 20, 21; Genesis 3) Fear of others is no excuse (v. 24)

Sin Catches Up With Us Are we guilty? May hide things from men (v. 14) Judgment is coming (Romans 2:16)

God’s Word and Power Not the same as men Fundamental mistake (v. 29) God is Israel’s strength (Genesis 12:1-3; Joshua 6:10-12) Cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18)

God’s Word and Power Who are we to defy God? Man makes mistakes, but not God Man excuses sin, but God doesn’t (Ezekiel 18:20; Psalm 50:16-20) Man is unclear, but God isn’t (1 Corinthians 14:33)

Terrible Effects of Sin Left the work for Samuel Reason for the utter destruction Punishment for sin (Exodus 17:8-16) Effort to keep God’s people from sin Samuel had to finish the job (vv. 32, 33)

Terrible Effects of Sin Sin separates friends Samuel mourned Saul’s death (vv. 11, 25, 26, 34, 35) Terrible effect on others Can ruin marriages, friendships, split churches, destroy families

Conclusion Do not learn from such experiences Will repeat them
