Hardships of Early Industrial Life Chapter 7.3 Review

Key Terms Urbanization The movement of people from rural settings to the cities Tenement Multistory buildings divided into apartments where factory workers lived. Labor union Workers’ organization, illegal at the time; pushed for reforms (better pay, better hours, etc.) Pauper A very poor person

Key Questions: chapter 7.3 What led to the massive migration of people from farms to cities? Changes in farming, soaring population growth and increasing demand for workers What was life like in the new industrial cities? While the middle class and wealthy lived in pleasant neighborhoods while the poor lived in tenements where garbage and waste rotted in the streets resulting in contaminated water; pollution!

More key questions…. What special problems did factory work create for women? Their jobs took them out of their houses for 12 hours a day AND then they still had to go home and feed, clean, and clothe their families, care for the upkeep of the house, etc. Low wages – long hours – not paid comparable to men

How did the conditions of the early industrial age improve? Child labor laws were eventually passed and inspectors were put into place to ensure the factories and mines followed the laws. Labor union won the right to bargain with employers for better wages, hours, and working conditions.

Why was the Industrial Revolution seen as both a blessing and a curse? The Age brought terrible hardships but at the same time created more jobs and wages eventually raised.

??????????????? Were the cons of industrialization worth it/ necessary for the progress made? Why/ why not? – Pros: new factories, more jobs, improved transportation: steamships, canals, railroads, turnpikes and eventually automobiles and airplanes – Cons: Low pay, child labor, terrible/ unsafe working conditions, long hours, loss of body parts – Was is worth it: YOU decide?
