Some words about Moscow Moscow is dear to every Russian. Moscow – is the capital of our country, its political, economic, commercial, cultural and historic centre with the population of about 10 million people. There are several versions on the origin of the word « Moskva».According to one of them this word derived from the names of Mosokha(Мосоха),who was a forefather of the Slovanic-Russian people,and his wife Kva(Ква)- hence the name « Mockva».
Some facts about the History of Moscow Moscow is one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1147 by Russian Prince Yuri Dolgoruky.The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin.The first walls were made of wood but later were replaced by thick oak logs.
The sights of Moscow. Our capital has rich history and a lot of places of interest.It is one of the biggest and the most beautiful cities of the world.All foreign tourists and guests visit Moscow when they come to Russia. The heart of the city is the Kremlin and Red Square.
The Kremlin Towers Twenty (20) towers on the Kremlin wall were constructed at the end of the 17th сentury.They were built for decoration and did not have military significance.
The oldest tower is the Tainitskaya Tower;it was built in См. схему
The highest of them is the Troitskaya Tower which is 85 m tall. См. схему
The most famous tower is Spasskaya;it is the symbol of Russia and Moscow. The Spasskaya Tower is a clock tower,and one can hear its chimes on the radio.The first clock was installed in 1625, and the present clock which we can see today was made in the middle of the 19th century.Its diametre is 6 m 12cm and the figures are 72сm high.
The Tsar-Bell Not far from the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great you will see the Tsar-Kolokol (Tsar- Bell) which weights more than 200 tons, its height is 6 metres,the diametre is 6.6 m. It was casted by Ivan Motorin in
The Tsar-Cannon. The Tsar-Cannon is a good example of the early masters, work. It was casted by Andrey Chokhov in 1585 to defend the city, but it never fired. Its weight is 40 tons and the length is 5.35 metres.
The Red Square One of the most popular sights of Moscow is the Red Square.It is one of the biggest and most beautiful squares in the world.It is 695 m long and has average width up to 130 m and an area to more than 70,000 square metres. The Red Square was first mentioned in the manuscripts of the 16th century.At first it was called Pozhar (the Fire),then it was renamed into Torg (Market Square). In old Russian language the word «red» means «beautiful». So Red Square means « Beautiful Square».
Cathedrals. The Kremlin with its magnificent cathedrals is one of the seven wonders of the world. One of them is the Uspensky Cahtedral. It was built in the 15 th century for important services and coronations.
Visitors to the Kremlin admire Blagoveschensky Cathedral – the home church of Russian Tsar family.
In St.Basils Cathedral (Pokrovsky) was built on the Red Square.It was erected in the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible) to commemorate the annexation of the Kazan and Astrakhan khanates to Russia.
The monument to Minin and Pozharsky Next to the Cathedral stands the monument to Minin and Pozharsky.Under the leadership of these heroes of the 1612 war, the Russian people drove the Polish invaders out of Moscow.
The Lobnoye Mesto. The Lobnoye Mesto – is the place of Execution, a platform of white stone more than 400 years old.The tsars, edicts were proclaimed and public executions carried out there.
The StateTretyakov Gallery
The StateTretyakov Gallery is one of the famous picture galleries in our country and all over the world.It was founded as a city museum in 1892.Today the Tretyakov Gallery has over 8,000 canvases; 5,000 works of early Russian art; 1,500 sculptures and 35,000 drawings.We can see pictures by such painters as Serov, Repin,Ivanov, Levitan and many others there.
