West Sacramento’s The Bridge District Green Streets: A Case Study Current Trends and Case Studies in Low Impact Development October 6, 2010

Presentation Overview Project History and Description Streets: The Primary Focus Sustainability Guidelines, Implementation and Application Urban Stormwater Management Solution

Project History and First Phase of Development: The Bridge District 2014 Plan

Streets: The Pedestrian Realm building frontage zoneclear zonefurnishing zone

Quality of the public realm defined by Streets How building relates to the streets Each Street has a clearly defined function and character These form the street hierarchy Buildings respond to the streets they front Union with street hierarchy = cohesive public realm Streets: The Planning Process

Sustainability Guidelines: Intent The intent of sustainability guidelines: establish a framework that will assist individual building projects in reducing their environmental impact contributing to the overall development’s sustainability goals. Goal of the district - LEED ND Silver

Sustainability Guidelines: Implementation Stormwater Management Purpose: This guideline limits disruption and pollution of natural water flows by managing stormwater run-off. Guideline: Encourage integrated stormwater management planning: treat stormwater runoff on-site through the use of bio- swales and landscape plantings encourage the use of green roofs, permeable pavers and other strategies to reduce impermeable surface area consider the potential to store and re-use rainwater on site for landscape irrigation.
