The Maidu Tribe A California Native American Tribe By Lizbet Vargas

The Maidu What in the world is the Maidu tribe. The Maidu tribe lived in Northern California. The climate was not too hot or too cold. They lived near rivers, lakes, and valleys. Most Maidu families lived along the tributaries of Sacramento.

The Maidu Homes Let me tell you about the Maidu homes . The Maidu built and lived near American rivers. They built different kinds of homes depending on the season. The Maidu used four poles standing upright in the ground. They made doors out of animal fur. Their homes were covered in bark.

The Maidu’s Food Have you ever seen the Maidu’s food. The Maidu would eat plants and oak trees. They also ate deer, elk, rabbits, ducks, geese, and quail. The Maidu made the acorn into soup. They also gathered and ate insects.

The Maidu’s Jobs Do you know what the Maidu jobs were . The Maidu women gathered acorns and nuts with their hands. The men were chosen for important jobs based on their good judgments and even tempers. The girls made baskets for the babies. The men made weapons such as axes, arrows, and bows. Sometimes the kids helped with the jobs.

The Maidu’s Clothing Did you know about the Maidu’s clothing. The men wore breechcloths made from buckskin or wire grass. The women wore aprons. The women also wore basket hats woven with geometric designs. In the winter they wore deerskin, leggings, and fur robes and blankets.

The Maidu’s Celebrations and Ceremonies What are They held specials dance ceremonies to honor grizzly bears and rattle snakes. The Maidu men wore decorative belts during dance ceremonies. The Maidu’s burned dead body’s with their stuff.

The Maidu Children The Maidu did not name their babies until they were two or three years old. They often had foot races and swimming contests. Sometimes a baby was hammed in honor of an ancestor. They helped their families certain jobs.

Interesting Facts about the Maidu Indians The Maidu homes were under ground. The Maidu were one of the largest tribes in California . They believed the creator made the stars, oak trees, birds and many kind of animals. The Maidu had great respect for animals. Some Maidu tribes are funding these efforts of keeping their tribe strong with money from casinos. There are about 3,550 Maidu Indians alive today.

The Maidus Conclusion The Maidu is an awesome California Native Americans Indian tribe. I only hope that the Maidu tribe stays the same number and or keep growing .
