What do adverbs look like? Very often, adverbs will have the suffix –ly at the end of the word. Examples: gently, quietly, abruptly 1. I gently brushed my new puppy. 2. The students quietly read. 3. Mrs. Smith abruptly left the meeting.

BE CAREFUL!!!!! Not all words that have the suffix –ly are adverbs!!!!! Examples: ugly, lively, friendly, 1. That is one ugly duckling! 2. That class is a lively bunch of characters! 3. Cinnamon is a friendly pony.

Adverbs modifying adjectives The book on the shelf is quite heavy. How heavy was the book? Yes, it was “quite” heavy. “Quite” is an adverb modifying the adjective heavy.

Adverbs modifying other adverbs 1. The bell rang very suddenly. First ask yourself, “HOW did the bell ring?” Now, ask, “HOW suddenly?” Yes, “very” suddenly. “Very” is an adverb that is modifying another adverb.

Remember… Adverbs mainly answer HOW, WHEN, and WHERE. 1. The bird sits happily on the wire. How does the bird sit? Yes, “happily” is an adverb modifying the verb “sit.”
