PARTS OF SPEECH  noun  pronoun  verb  adjective  adverb  preposition  conjunction  interjection! Ouch! I hurt my foot on that darn trap.

NOUN  The name of a person, place, thing, or idea  common  proper

NOUN  The name of a person, place, thing, quality, or idea  common - girl  proper - Madeline  a noun can be a subject, direct object, object of preposition, indirect object, apposition, or predicate nominative Mary was reading a green book.

PRONOUN  takes the place of a noun  Jack - he, him  girl - she, her  tree - it  My favorite tree is in our front yard; it provides shade for many.

VERB  shows action - climb  state of being - is, am, was, were, are  has tense  climb, climbed, will climb, etc.

PREPOSITION  starts a prepositional phrase  in, on, over, under, by, through, beside  a prepositional phrase ends with a noun or pronoun  anything a squirrel can do to two or more trees

Verbs - Active Voice  If the subject DOES the action, the sentence is in the active voice.  John looked in the mirror.

Verbs - Passive Voice  If the subject is acted upon, the sentence is in the passive voice.  The money was held by Kent.

Parallelism  Parallel construction means to give the same structure to two or more parts of a sentence.  The activities section on my resume says I like swimming, boating, and to run. WRONG  The activities section on my resume says I like swimming, boating, and running. RIGHT

Dangling Modifiers  When a verbal phrase begins the sentence and modifies the subject of the sentence, the subject should follow it immediately.  Walking down the street, the building came into sight. WRONG  Walking down the street, the building was seen by Holly. WRONG  Walking down the street, Holly saw the building.
