What is an adjective? An adjective describes or modifies a noun by telling 1) what kind, 2) how many, or 3) which one.

The old boat sat on the purple whale. One man fished from the boat. That whale looks very tame. Which one? How many? What kind?

Why are adjectives awesome? Adjectives are awesome because they give detail, provide specifics, and give readers the ability to mentally picture an image. THINK IMAGERY!!!!

There are special types of adjectives called  Articles Demonstrative Adjectives Comparative Adjectives Superlative Adjectives

Articles A An The They are called articles yet fit into the category of adjectives, one of the eight parts of speech!

A Use before words beginning with a consonant sound. Use with singular nouns. a cat a key a book

An Use before words beginning with a VOWEL sound. an antelope an orange an article

Demonstrative Adjectives These adjectives point out specific things. this that these those

This, That This boy is my friend. I want this boy on my team. That soccer ball belongs to me. I bought that ball yesterday. use with singular nouns answers the question which one?

These, Those use with plural nouns answers the question which ones? These people are working. They are working on these problems. Those books are on the table. The boys used those books to help them.

Comparative Adjectives used to compare two nouns or pronouns. Add –er to the end of one syllable words. Add more to the beginning of multi-syllable words. NEVER use –er and more together.

Let’s try some comparatives! Joe is ______ than Bill. Bill works _______ than Joe. This car is __________to drive than that one. (tall) (hard) (difficult) taller harder more difficult

Superlative Adjectives Used to compare three or more nouns or pronouns Add –est to the end of one syllable words. Add most to the beginning of multi-syllable words. NEVER use -est and most together.

Predicate Adjectives follow a linking verb refer back to the subject of the sentence more than one PA can modify the same noun The woman’s hair color looked beautiful. SLVPA The brown hues are elegant and soft. ADJ’s

DON’T FORGET: Predicate Adjectives…. PA’s follow a linking verb and refer back to the noun or subject. They are called predicate adjectives yet fit the adjective category.
