So What is a Soliloquy? SoliloquyMonologue 0 From Latin words Solus = “alone” and Loqui = “to speak” 0 is a speech that one gives TO ONESELF 0 In a play the character thinks aloud so that the audience better understand what is happening 0 From Greek words Mono = “single”; Legein = “to speak” 0 speech given by a single person TO AN AUDIENCE either within a play or sitting in the theater watching the play.

Example of a Soliloquy Macbeth: To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow, Creeps in this petty pace from day to day, To the last syllable of recorded time; And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. What is an Aside? 0 An aside is when the character talks ONLY to the audience. 0 The other characters are not included in this dialogue; it’s like the heard nothing and know nothing about what the audience is being told. 0 You can see this a lot in TV shows. 0 The Office 0 Parks and Recreations 0 Malcolm in the Middle
