Relevance of the chosen subject In this work the problem of accent modifications of English polysyllabic words in a phrase in British English is discussed. One cannot fully describe English intonation without analyzing a word accent. Prosodic components (pitch, loudness, tempo) and speech accent work interdependently. But English has a tendency to modify word accent in a phrase under the influence of the rhythm of the sentence. That makes the problem of studying accent modifications in English very important.

It's important to recognize the meaning behind the tones, and to be able to use them so that there are no misunderstandings between the speaker and the listener. In the Introduction the aim and tasks of the work are explained. The first chapter is devoted to the description of English word accent, it gives the main facts of the present-day English polysyllabic word accent. It also describes the nature and types of accent modifications of words in connected speech. The second chapter describes the results of the practical analysis of accent modifications of polysyllabic words in a phrase in British English. The Conclusion presents the main results of the research and summarizes the findings. The Bibliography presents the list of works reviewed and referred to in this paper.
