A PRACTICE OF SANCTUARY Dr Sally Stewart – Staff Representative Director

SANCTUARY: refuge or safety from pursuit, persecution, or other danger

PAKISTAN WHERE DO OUR PATIENTS COME FROM? IRAN SRI LANKA BANGLADESH SYRIA

The way refugees are pouring in from every port of this country is becoming an outrage. The number of aliens entering the country through the back door is a problem to which the Daily Mail has repeatedly pointed Refugees swamping our cities Refugees taking all our jobs 1938 I am absolutely outraged at the thousands of immigrants flooding into the country. If the Government don’t stop this, we Britons will become an ‘ethnic minority’ in our own country Daily Record 2000

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) believes that: "ill-informed, adverse media coverage has contributed to heightened local tensions and resentment of asylum seekers". ‘We've been here before’ Anne Karpf The Guardian 8 June 2002 The UK has a proud tradition of providing a place of safety for genuine refugees. However, we are determined to refuse protection to those who do not need it, and will take steps to remove those who are found to have made false claims. Accessed

Downing Street declared that the controversial campaign telling illegal immigrants to "go home" was working and could be extended nationwide. 11 people left the UK after seeing the advertising vans. Staff spent 18 hours dealing with bogus calls and texts. The Advertising Standards Agency banned the vans last month.

‘When I arrived in America, though I had left the war physically far behind, in my mind, the soldiers were still chasing to kill me, my stomach was always hungry, and my fear and distrust kept me from opening up to new friendships. I thought the war was over when I left Cambodia, but I realize now that for survivors and all those involved, the war is never over just because the guns have fallen silent.’ Loung Ung (1970-) Cambodian-American Human Rights Activist ‘A lasting solution, the possibility to begin a new life, is the only dignified solution for the refugee himself.’ Poul Hartlin UN High Commissioner for Refugees,

‘While every refugee's story is different and their anguish personal, they all share a common thread of uncommon courage – the courage not only to survive, but to persevere and rebuild their shattered lives.’ Antonio Guterres, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, former Portugese Prime Minister ‘We are not myths of the past, ruins in the jungle, or zoos. We are people and we want to be respected, not to be victims of intolerance and racism.’ Rigoberta Menchú, Guatemala Nobel Peace Prize Winner 1992

Michael Marks - one of the founders of Marks and Spencer. Russian refugee. Ed Miliband - Leader of the Labour Party. Son of a Belgian Jewish refugee Carl Djerassi - the inventor of the first contraceptive pill. Austrian refugee Ben Elton - comedian and grandson of a Czechoslovakian refugee. Alexandrew Joseph Andrew Szekeldj – my Dad, a Hungarian refugee ‘I urge you to celebrate the extraordinary courage and contributions of refugees past and present.’ Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General , 2001 Nobel Peace Prize

‘And they will stop bogus asylum- seekers from getting NHS care, saving 1 billion of tax payers cash’ The Sun, 31 July 2003 The Public Bill Committee is now able to receive written evidence, deadline Failed asylum seekers will have to pay for primary care! A doctor's ethical duty is to treat any patient who comes to him/her with a medical need. It is not part of a doctor's duty to find out if that person is eligible for treatment under the NHS.
