Hyaline “Woolly” Mold Colony

Dematacious (Dark Colored) Mold Colony

Terminology Dermatomycoses –Fungal infections of all layers of the skin, hair and nails caused by fungi other than the “dermatophytes” Dermatophytoses-Fungal infections caused by one of the “dermatophytes” (fungi of the genera Microsporum, Trichophyton, Epidermophyton) Cutaneous mycosis-Any fungal infection of the skin

Terminology Ringworm (synonym Tinea)-Circular fungal lesion of the smooth area of the skin, scalp, feet and nails. Most of these infections are caused by the dermatophytes (ancient physicians thought they were actually worms (Tinea is Latin for worm) beneath the skin.)

Terminology Tinea corporis- Ringworm of the body Tinea capatis- Ringworm of the head, including scalp Tinea unguium-Ringworm of the nails Tinea cruris-Ringworm of the groin (jock itch)

Ringworm of Skin, Nails, Hair

Terminology Tinea pedis-Ringworm of the foot Tinea barbae-Ringworm of the beard Mycotic keratitis-Inflammatory fungal lesion of the cornea of the eye Pyriform-Shaped like a pear or tear drop

Terminology Globose-Spherical or shaped like a globe Glabrous-Having a smooth surface without obvious projection (e.g. smooth areas of the skin) Echinulate-Having spiny projections (the name is derived from a group of animals, the eqinulates, which includes the starfish, that have spiny skin Fusiform-Spindle shaped, elongated oval structure with pointed ends (body of an airplane is called a“fuselage”)

Spindle Shaped (“Fusiform”) Septate Macroconidia

Terminology Muriform-Any fungal structure that has the general appearance of a berry Zoophilic-Human fungal infection contracted from a non-human animal
