Unit V: Notes #4 US Enters War World History

Why did US enter WWI on the side of the Allies? -similar heritage & culture -Britain/France were democracies; Germany/Austria were absolute monarchies -Pres. Wilson wanted to “make world safe for democracy.” -US was “neutral” during beg. Of war, but secretly favored Allies (sent weapons to British and French)

What sparked the US confrontation? -Germans sank Lusitania, a British passenger liner (128 Americans killed) -Unrestricted U-boat warfare also sank USS Illinois -Zimmerman Note: German diplomat offer Mexican govt. a deal: If war broke out: -Mexico would help Germany -Germany would help Mexico regain Southwest US

-Britain intercepted the note, gave it to US, -April 1917, US declares war on Germany -Timing ends up being very important, due to Russian Rev. and their eventual withdrawal from war
