Date Learning Objective: To understand how to write a good paragraph Key terms: Point, Evidence, Explain (P.E.E.) Writing a P.E.E. Paragraph Copy the title and objective and answer the starter question. 10 minutes!! Starter: Which is the better argument? Pick one and give your reason. (1)Unhealthy food should be banned in schools because it is bad for you. (2) Unhealthy food should be banned in schools. Over 20% of children in Europe are overweight. This high figure shows that drastic actions need to be taken to prevent children from over-eating.

Make a point. Give evidence. Explain your evidence. 1.Make a POINT: Making a statement: ‘Unhealthy food should be banned in schools.’ There should be one main POINT per paragraph.

2. Give EVIDENCE. Back up your point: ‘Over 20% of children in Europe are overweight.’ There should be at least one concrete example/evidence to prove your POINT. ! In an English essay, ‘EVIDENCE’ is found in the text (play, poem, book). You show it is evidence (that it is copied from the book, that it’s a quotation) by putting it in quotation marks (‘…’)

3. EXPLAIN your evidence. Explain your evidence: This high figure shows that drastic actions need to be taken to prevent children from over-eating. Don’t just make a point, stick in some evidence, and move on to the next point. EXPLAIN how your evidence backs up your POINT! Typically, you will start a sentence explaining you evidence like this: ‘This shows that …’

Writing your second paragraph: Write about Eddie’s relationship with Catherine: (father- figure/uncle/forbidden love for Catherine) (Remember the question: Look back at ‘the two kisses’ scene from Act 2 and answer the following question: What makes this scene shocking?) Remember: Make a POINT: Give EVIDENCE: (you should have quotations from other lessons) EXPLAIN how your evidence backs up your point: (This shows that …)

Example: Eddie is a father-figure to his niece Catherine. He pays great attention to the way Catherine dresses, saying that her skirt is ‘too short’. This shows that he wants Catherine to be decent. He does not approve of her flirting with the boys. He tells her, ‘I’m tellin’ you you’re walking wavy.’ This shows he does not want her to get involved with boys. This is a big reason why he does not want her to work in a rough neighbourhood. When he says, ‘you been givin’ me the willies the way you walk down the street’, he shows how there might be more than just fatherly protection that he feels for Catherine. (2) Write about Eddie’s relationship with Catherine: (father- figure/uncle/forbidden love for Catherine) Eddie as a father-figure (Catherine’s appearance/dress, job, relationships with boys) Eddie’s obsession with Catherine (cares A LOT about her, how Beatrice feels)

Swap with a partner your book. Give a tick if you see a point. Give a tick if you see evidence. Give a tick if you see quotation marks. Give a tick if you explanation. Count up the ticks. Plenary
