INTRODUCTION MUST HAVES! ATTENTION GETTER: Open with something that gets the reader’s attention. A strong statement regarding tragedy/life/free will etc. A question? A quote (include a citation) etc. For CHARACTERS-Include the title and the author in your introduction. 2. Include the idea of cause-effect in the intro 3. THESIS STATEMENT (cause- effect-tragic hero) *Optional/as needed BRIEF plot summary or basic overview of the person. 11A

Works Cited & In-text Citations  Works Cited-Use a work in an anthology in your agenda book to cite the text.  Direct quotes must be typed exactly  Use signal phrases-do NOT just “plunk” in!  Cite (in-text and on works cited)any outside sources you use or references/quotes you incorporate  Cite as a play-use author’s last name, page # and line #  See example next slide 11A

Sample Direct Quote with Signal Phrase and in-text cite  When Oedipus declares, “Until now I was a stranger to this tale/As I had been a stranger to the crime” (Sophocles 211 l ) the irony is used to highlight his current ignorance of the situation. However, it also serves to set up how his personal choices not fate will bring about his tragedy. (continue on with explanation) 11A

ESSAY WORK! Submit to Turn it in! by midnight!  IN-TEXT CITATIONS must contain the author’s last name and the line number(s) of the quote in parenthesis.  Use quote marks for exact words-make sure you type them accurately.  Paraphrases still need citations!  Smooth in quotes do not DROP IN!  TITLE OF THE PLAY SHOULD BE IN ITALICS.  AVOID “I” AND “you”  Avoid CONTRACTIONS  EXPLAIN!!

ESSAY WORK  Drafting body paragraphs  AT LEAST TWO COMPLETED BY END OF THE HOUR!  Pay attention to:  Topic Sentences  Transitions  In-text Cites 11A

TOPIC SENTENCES  State them clearly.  Do NOT use a QUOTE as a topic sentence.  Quotes should support YOUR IDEA not be THE idea.  Do NOT retell the story-use it to show YOUR POINT!
