The sap dripped from trees long ago, then it hardened. Scientists use amber, it helps them study animals that lived long ago. Sometimes insects were trapped in the sap as it dripped down trees. Their bodies can still be seen in amber so if you get a chance to see an insect trapped in amber at a museum check it out!
